Do I need experience or some minimum level of fitness to do Crossfit?
Absolutely not! Our workouts and exercises scale to any level. The role of your coach is to monitor your progress and scale your workouts to maximize safety and get you the best result. You are pushed and encouraged based on your current level of fitness. All we want is for you to give your best effort during each workout.
I have/had an injury. Can I still do CrossFit?
Many people have successfully used CrossFit to rehabilitate from minor injuries. We believe the best path to long-term health is to learn perfect form on functional movements, then to slowly build strength in those movements, rather than to avoid them altogether. At the same time, our instructors are always happy to work with you to scale and substitute exercises, to tailor workouts to your abilities. That said, we cannot offer you specific medical advice, and advise that you consult your physician before starting this (or any other) exercise program.
I'm really fit and would like to skip the F4 and come to a class, can I do that?
No. There are no drop-ins to the WOD classes. You must complete a series of private F4 sessions before being allowed to take WOD classes. If you are from another CrossFit affiliate out of town and are experienced in CrossFit, we will sometimes make exceptions. In this case, please contact us in advance and let us know which class you would like to attend.
Will CrossFit make me lose weight?
The sole objective of CrossFit is always to increase one’s FITNESS (see crossfit.com for definition). We are concerned with improving your athletic performance and ability to carry out functional tasks. It just so happens that by following our training and nutritional protocols, individuals generally see desirable changes in their body composition (ie decreased fat % and increased lean mass).
Do you take credit cards, cash, and cheques?
Yes, we accept cash, cheques, EFTPOS, MasterCard and Visa. We also have a flexible direct debit service for members.
Can I have a receipt?
Yes you can--printed, emailed or both.
Do you sell T-shirts?
Of course. Come on down to the Studio and get some!
Do you have shower facilities?
Yes we do! We have a private shower and change room available on-site.
Can I just come to CrossFit Active and work out on my own?
No. We are more like a dojo or sports club than a typical commercial gym. We offer classes and one-on-one sessions, where people work out under trainer supervision, as it yields better, safer, and faster results than having people simply use the facility by themselves.
Why does your membership cost more than Fitness First?
We are different to a commercial gym like Fitness First, whenever you train at CrossFit Active you will always have a highly qualified coach “cueing” you. CrossFit Active is the Fitness First alternative to small group personal training with highly effective programming methods to see results faster.
Is it worth it?
We definitely would say it is worth it, but we are a little biased. The only person who can truly tell you if it is worth it is you. The only way you can objectively know is to show up and participate in a workout. We can confidently tell you that we cost less than most personal training and bootcamps, and we get superior results. We cost more than a traditional globo-gym because we provide expert coaching, equipment, and support that those guys can not.
What should I wear when I come?
Comfortable workout gear and some running shoes.
What should I bring when I come?
You should bring water, a towel, and a light snack for after the workout.
What type of results can I expect?
Although you will probably start feeling better and stronger immediately, new students can expect about a 15-20% improvement in strength and endurance following the first fifteen sessions. In addition, our findings show that flexibility, agility and body composition are improved. Subjective things like increased mental toughness, energy levels, improved sleep and reduced joint stiffness are also reported. Most of our members are shocked at their improvements even though they would consider themselves exercisers before starting CrossFit.
Will it be hard?
Yes, but not impossible. Every workout will be scaled to your ability by a CrossFit trainer.
I’m a female. Will I get big and bulky going to CrossFit?
No. You have to train a certain way to get big and bulky. We don’t train that way.
What is a class like?
In an hour-long group class, we will warm up and then usually spend up to the first half of class working on a skill such as proper exercise form, new lifting movements, balance training, gymnastics-type training, or one of a hundred other things. You will leave here having learned something. The second half of class is devoted to the actual CrossFit workout, and yes…you will get a good workout!
How many people are in a class?
You can generally expect around 6-12 people in a class.
What is a Private Coaching session like?
A private coaching session is structured much like a group class. However, in a personal training session, the trainer’s attention is fully focused on you. This allows you to ask more questions, and also enables the trainer to go more in depth on technical issues. Private coaching enables you to progress even faster.
Will I/can I get big doing CrossFit?
CrossFit HQ:
“If you train the WODs hard, and eat right and get lots of sleep, you will definitely gain lean mass, lose fat, and yes, you can build muscle mass with the CrossFit protocol. More specifically, according to Coach Glassman, here is a hierarchy of training for mass from greater to lesser efficacy:
- Bodybuilding on steroids
- CrossFitting on steroids
- CrossFitting without steroids
- Bodybuilding without steroids
The bodybuilding model is designed around, requires, steroids for significant hypertrophy.
The neuroendocrine response of bodybuilding protocols is so blunted that without "exogenous hormonal therapy" little happens.
The CrossFit protocol is designed to elicit a substantial neuroendocrine whollop and hence packs an anabolic punch that puts on impressive amounts of muscle though that is not our concern. Strength is.
Natural bodybuilders (the natural ones that are not on steroids) never approach the mass that our athletes do. They don't come close.”
